I finally found the dv tools to encode/play dv
# apt-get install libdv-bin
bah playdv still can't skip, I'll need to test blocking writes
bingo I can abuse playdv http://libdv.cvs.sourceforge.net/libdv/libdv/playdv/playdv.c?view=markup
to do my bidding
bah, playdv fails to play its own example dv files
